My Digital Life

LAST UPDATED: August 26th 2011

The PC is increasingly a big part of our lives, and so are phones. I decided to make a list about apps that I use on my PC and my current smart phone: a Nokia N8. I’ll add more the moment I remember them or I start using something new.

Hopefully, it will be helpful.

Operating System (OS):

  • Windows 7 32-bit (unless you have more than 4GB of RAM and do heavy lifting with media-creation applications, it’s more than enough)

Internet Browser:

  • Primary: RockMelt (exactly like Google Chrome except it’s got tabs on the sides. One on the left is for Facebook chat. The right is for RSS feeds. Both can be hidden if not being used)
  • Secondary: Google Chrome (fast, reliable, and you can sync your settings and theme among different computers). I have the following extensions installed:
    • AdBlock Plus
    • Better Pop Up Blocker
    • Clickable Links (Turns unclickable URLs into…well…clicklable)
    • Facebook Disconnect (Stops Facebook from tracking pages you visit)
    • FlashBlock (ADVANCED USERS Only): Blocks all Flash from loading on a website, until you unblock the one you want to use. Does wonders if you’re capped or want to load a website fast.
    • Ghostery (Protects your privacy by blocking trackers)
    • Google Analytics Opt-Out
    • IBA Opt-Out (Same as above but for advertising)
    • LastPass (Password Manager)
    • Mark for Later (Adds or removes a Read-It-Later bookmark with just one click.)
    • Vanilla (A cookie Whitelist manager)

POWER TIP: You can type in about:flags in the address bar to get advanced options. I recommend enabling ‘Check for known conflicts; GPU Accelerated Compositing, GPU Accelerated Canvas 2D, and Web Page Prerendering)

  • Tertiary 1: Internet Explorer 9. It’s smooth, minimalist and perfect for that speedy browse.
  • Tertiary 2: Opera. It’s a fantastic browser, but it’s most useful feature is syncing your bookmarks with the ones on Opera Mini. A must-have if you browse a lot on the go, and want to read a page later on your PC.

Productivity & Security:

  • Microsoft Office 2010
  • Wakoopa (tracks all the apps you have installed, useful if you can’t remember when you format your PC)
  • TeraCopy (better way of copying files in Windows)
  • Nokia Ovi Suite
  • Microsoft Security Essentials
  • Malware Bytes
  • Orbit Downloader
  • JDownloader (A Download Manager for websites like MediaFire, Rapidshare and Megaupload)
  • Windows 7 Manager (Advanced Users only)

Entertainment & Games:

  • Steam. ‘Nuff said.
  • Raptr (an all-in-one messaging client for when you’re playing games. The overlay works just like Steam)
  • Windows Live Messenger
  • Skype
  • XBMC (Media Center)
  • CDisplay (Comic Reader)
  • MediaMonkey (just for saving ID3v1 and v2 tags; WMP and iTunes)
  • iTunes
  • VLC Media Player
  • Codecs, NEVER INSTALL A CODEC PACK.
  • Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate
  • Last.fm Scrobbler
  • Picasa (photo editing and retouching)

Flash Drive:

  • CCleaner Portable
  • Portable Chrome
  • OpenOffice Suite

Favourite Websites:

  • Abovetopsecret.com
  • Discogs (when music information on Wikipedia fails)
  • Unrealitymag.com
  • Oddee.com (when you’re bored)
  • Gamasutra.com (gaming news from the developer’s perspective)
  • Joystiq.com (gaming blog)
  • MaximumPC.com (useful tech tips website)
  • MobileRNR.com (views on the current state of smartphones)
  • Divxcrawler.com (movies, direct download)
  • Readitlaterlist.com (to mark websites for later reading)

Nokia N8 (Symbian Anna)

  • Swype (I love it!)
  • Opera Mini
  • Mobbler (a  Last.FM scrobbler)
  • fMobi (Facebook)
  • Advanced Blocker (filter calls and messages)
  • Mobile Guard (kind of like Windows Security Center)
  • Gravity (Twitter client)
  • EpocCam Pro (for using my phone as a Webcam)
  • MXit (IM client, South Africa only)
  • Nimbuzz (All-in-one IM Client with Facebook Chat)
  • Skype (when Wi-Fi is available)
  • SoundHound (TrackID)
